Expired protection

Yesterday evening I recieved a call from a client who has recently purchased a new Netbook PC only to find their PC is now plauged with malware of all sorts. The call originated at pop-ups, but quickly ventured to poor system performance and a lack of virus protection.

I remoted into their system to take a look and to my suprise, the antivirus software they thought they downloaded through a search engine turned out to be a dud; their browser was being over run by malware that seemed to provide you what you aren’t looking for – more malware. It wasn’t too complicated or time-consuming to fix, but the real culprit was the fact that their anti-virus subscription had run out and they failed to renew their license or get other free software readily available online.

It wasn’t until they started noticing their machine acting up that they decided it was time to download an antivirus program; and it was already too late, because no matter what their query would have been – it would turn up bogus results every time.

My Freeware Prescription:

  • AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
  • Spybot S & D
  • CCleaner
